Is Tesamorelin FDA-Approved?

Regulatory Status and Clinical Evidence

Is tesamorelin FDA-approved? Yes, but the approval applies to one specific prescription medication, for one clearly defined medical use.

Tesamorelin is FDA-approved for reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV who have lipodystrophy. It is not FDA-approved for general weight loss, bodybuilding, anti-aging treatment, athletic performance, or routine body-composition management.

Understanding this distinction is important because FDA approval does not automatically apply to every product that carries the name tesamorelin.

What Is Tesamorelin?

Tesamorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). It contains the 44-amino-acid sequence found in human growth hormone-releasing factor, with a modification designed to increase its stability. GHRH signals the pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone; tesamorelin acts on this pathway, increasing growth hormone secretion and subsequently raising insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).

What Is Tesamorelin FDA-Approved For?

The FDA-approved indication is the reduction of excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV who have lipodystrophy. The approved label also makes several limitations clear:

  • Tesamorelin is not indicated for weight-loss management.
  • Its long-term cardiovascular safety has not been established.
  • Its safety and effectiveness have not been established in children.

Does FDA Approval Cover Other Uses?

No. Uses such as general abdominal-fat reduction, obesity treatment, anti-aging care, muscle development, athletic performance, or fatty liver treatment are not included in the FDA-approved indication. There is an important difference between an FDA-approved prescription medication, a compounded product, and a research-labeled product — these categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

The EGRIFTA Family

Tesamorelin is the active ingredient in the EGRIFTA family of prescription products. The FDA first approved EGRIFTA in 2010, and approved EGRIFTA WR in March 2025 as a new formulation and multidose presentation that reduces how frequently a vial must be reconstituted, without changing the approved medical indication.

Are Compounded or Research-Use Products FDA-Approved?

No. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. A "research use only" label does not make a product FDA-approved for use in people. The presence of the word tesamorelin on a vial does not establish that it is equivalent to an FDA-approved prescription product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tesamorelin FDA-approved for weight loss?

No. The FDA-approved label specifically states that tesamorelin is not indicated for weight-loss management.

Is tesamorelin FDA-approved for belly fat?

Only in a narrowly defined context — to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy, not for general abdominal-fat reduction.

Is compounded tesamorelin FDA-approved?

No. Compounded drugs do not undergo the same FDA premarket approval process as approved prescription medications.

The Bottom Line

Tesamorelin has legitimate FDA approval, but that approval is narrow — tied to specific EGRIFTA formulations used to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Compounded and research-labeled products do not inherit that approval.
